I grew up in the golden age of R&B. My favorite musicians and groups were and still are Jodeci, Mary J. Blige, Michael Jackson, Tevin Campbell, Janet Jackson, TLC, Xscape and so many more. I could literally go on forever, but let’s switch gears to marketing. I want you to think about your favorite song and why you like it. You know the one that you have on repeat, so that you can memorize the words. It makes you feel something, maybe it makes you remember something that you went through or are going through.
For example, one of my favorite songs is, “Come and Talk to Me,” by Jodeci. Here are the opening lyrics:
I’ve been watching you for so very long, trying to get my nerve build up to be so strong. I really want to meet you, but I’m kind of scared, cause you’re the kind of lady with so much class. I get my thoughts together for the very next day, but when I see you lady, I forget what to say. Your eyes and hair, such a beautiful tone, the way you dress and walk it really turns me on. Oh, you really turn me on. Come on, Come on, Come on, Come and talk to me…
Who has felt that way, when they wanted someone to talk to them about their product or ask them how it works, or why it is important?
Your marketing needs to connect with your audience, make them want to engage with you and your product. The key to getting a reaction is knowing your audience and speaking in their language. Maybe it isn’t the R&B song, but instead it is rock, country or musical show tune.
The lesson here is to be adaptable, but still stay true to yourself and your business. Come and Talk to Me, and get help to craft persuasive and authentic messaging for you.
